DISHEVELED SOPHISTICATION:

NO "OUTFITS" ALLOWED.

PETER SOM RUNWAY, DISHEVELED AND YET SO PERFECT.
I like the look that isn't a look. You know, the one that is not entirely put together - definitely not matchy matchy and entirely creative. Something you piece together with a steady, or maybe not so steady, hand of your ever-changing demeanor. Your hair, your makeup, nothing is quite perfect... and it's not supposed to be either. I call this disheveled sophistication, but others would call it ecclectic or bohemian chic. It really doesn't matter what you call it so long as you embrace the no-boundaries stylistic approach this look requires and put your matching shoes and bags and accessories away.

Disheveled sophistication is not an easy accomplishment. There's disheveled and then there's lazy. Throwing on some sweatpants stained with ketchup and a cheaply made baseball hat is not going to give you the coveted look. Disheveled sophistication actually takes some work. It requires you to pick and choose wisely. Never coordinated and never contrived, but definitely artsy and avant garde. The goal is not to look like you rolled out of bed. Au contraire, the look is to portray a woman/man of natural stylistic capabilites. Someone who can make anything look great and like it belongs with very little effort.

NICOLE RICHIE, DISHEVELED AND YET STILL GLAM.
Try a vintage t shirt with velour pants, stilettos and a leopard faux fur coat. The velour pants and stilettos dress up the t shirt making everything seem a bit more luxe and the leopard coat just adds to your mystique. Try a gold, sequin mini skirt paired with a cable knit sweater in red and to the knee lace-up military boots (lace tights a must). The chunky knit sweater in red actually downplays what would be a rather fancy skirt and the boots tell your audience you're not here to blend in, making the overall look a bit edgier. The standing order here is to have fun with your wardrobe by mixing textures, colors and patterns. Everything actually does work well together if you focus on the vibe you are trying to convey versus the coordination.

OUR 2010 FAMILY SHOT. ANYTHING BUT COORDINATED...
WELL, EXCEPT FOR MY DAUGHTER'S POSE.
Men, you can accomplish this look with a simple untucking of your shirt... keep it tucked just under your belt buckle and let the rest of the shirt sort of drape over your waist line. This is only appropriate with jeans or a casual pant (read: PLEASE do not do this with a suit). You can also throw on some high top sneakers untied with a scarf or a vest on top - accessories really make the disheveled look come into it's own.
