My fashion aesthetic is, well, a walking contradiction, going from urban/bohemian to classic/conservative/punk to adrogynous/sex kitten. You get the drift. I like to push the envelope and confuse people. It's fun. When I saw the latest trend in the collared shirt, I got all excited. This trend is exactly what the doctor ordered. Why? Maybe because designers are taking that sheer material we're seeing all over the place (laces, gauze, etc.), topping it with a velvet widespread collar and buttoning models to the top. Or, maybe they're adding a flair with a flapped, trench-like detail in the back like Jenni Kayne. Alexander Wang is cutting the sleeves off altogether and forget the buttons, he's just tightening it up with a outrageously proper acute collar. What makes this work is the utter mystery behind the "button up." It keeps your audience wondering what could be underneath - a sexy decolletage, that's what.
