HEAD TO TOE DENIM

IS THIS SEASON'S COMEBACK KID.

CHLOE SPRING 2011
When this trend surfaced in the 80's, I couldn't wait to beat down the door at Guess and score my first all light pink denim ensemble, zippers included. It was all kinds of wrong, but I sure as hell didn't want to be right. Side pony tail and Reeboks tabut, I looked all kinds of ah-maz-ing. Okay, maybe not. 2011 has taken this somewhat stiff, Fresh Prince of Bel Air look to a level of dare I say, sophistication.

RALPH LAUREN
Chambray, lightly washed with opalescent round buttons on collared shirts, smocked with lace. Huge, and I mean HUGE, bell bottom jeans paired with gold bralettes and denim western-inspired collared shirts tied at the navel. Soft, cotton denim overalls with silk bohemian tunics. Maxi skirts with ruffled tiers... in denim. You name it, it's being done and well, no surprise here, I love it.

LAYER IN DENIM AND PULL UP SOME HIGH-WAISTED JEANS. SO CUTE.

It might seem overwhelming at first since it does sort of counter all that I've ever taught you...like, do not match or coordinate... ever. BUT, if you change up the wash of the denim in say your jacket and your jeans, it will add depth and make you look less contrived (ie. dorky). Layering is really crucial when doubling up with a jacket or jeans. Add a soft vest in merino wool underneath (as pictured above) to break it up a bit. Of course, if you're sporting a full denim jumpsuit, there's not much to "break up," now is there? That would defeat the point of an all denim-clad jumpsuit. It's supposed to make a denim statement... go with it.
